The Department of Virology provides a diagnostic service in virology including viral isolation and detection by immunofluorescence, serological testing and molecular detection.

A clinical virologist is on-call and available at all times to provide advice about the optimal use of the laboratory tests and to assist with the interpretation of results. Consultation and advice on the management of patient with infections is provided in association with the Department of Microbiology and Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases.

The Department, in conjunction with the Department of Microbiology, Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, and the Australian Centre for Immunisation Research, has particular interests in the paediatric and congenital viral infections.

Appointments are necessary for consultation in virological infectious disease. Contact the clinical virologist directly on 9845 3823, or contact the microbiology registrar via the Hospital switchboard on 9845 0000.
