What is CHISM? CHISM, the Children's Hospital Institute of Sports Medicine, is part of the Children's Hospital at Westmead. CHISM is unique to Australia. Services include paediatric sports medicine, rehabilitation services, paediatric exercise science research, peadiatric exercise testing and exercise prescription, education and training and child advocacy. CHISM is supported by donated funds, user pays services and medicare billing. What does CHISM do? CHISM provides treatment that enriches the lives of children with acute injuries and chronic illnesses and/or disabilities such paediatric obesity, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, cerebral palsy, cancer, spina bifida, haemophilia, hypermobility, muscular dystrophy, juvenile arthritis and children following traumatic brain injury. Experts at CHISM provide tailor-made exercise programs for these children. They give advice on suitable exercise and sporting activities for different diseases so that these children have the chance to participate in a part of life considered routine for their healthy peers. In so doing, their lives are defined by their activities and not their disease The mission of CHISM is to provide the highest quality services in paediatric sports medicine and exercise science through clinical care, research, policy development, scientific physiological assessments, promoting good practice, education and training, consulting and working with key community stakeholders and engaging in advocacy issues on behalf of children and youth.
