The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (NCIRS) was established in 1997 to give independent advice about diseases that can be prevented by immunisation.

The Centre aims to coordinate, promote and carry out research on immunisation and vaccine-preventable diseases. It provides a national perspective on all issues relevant to immunisation in Australia.

The Centre brings together a group of experts in preventive medicine, paediatrics, infectious disease, epidemiology and laboratory science from The Children's Hospital at Westmead, The University of Sydney and the NSW Health Department.

What we do:

• We carry out research about immunisation and diseases it can prevent.
• We study the occurrence in Australia of diseases like measles, German measles, whooping cough and hepatitis.
• We study immunisation coverage, and try to find out why some children are not being vaccinated.
