The Department of Clinical Genetics coordinates the following clinics:

  • General Paediatric Genetics clinic
  • Connective Tissue Dysplasia clinic
  • Genetic Eye clinic
  • Genetic Dermatology clinic
  • Prenatal Genetics clinic (held at Westmead Hospital)

Note: The Adult Genetics clinic (held at Westmead Hospital), is also attended by our staff but is now coordinated through the Department of Genetic Medicine at Westmead Hospital, telephone 9845 9780. Prenatal Genetics clinic continues to be coordinated by the CHW Department. 

Genetic diagnostic consultation and counselling is also offered at CHW in association with the following clinics:

  • Limb Deficiency clinic (with Rehabilitation)
  • Craniofacial clinic (with Plastic Surgery)
  • Sydney Fragile X clinic (with CDU)

Outreach genetics clinics are provided to the Western NSW Health District at Dubbo and at Orange.

Referrals for familial cancer counselling for adults should be directed to the Familial Cancer Service based at Westmead Hospital, telephone 9845 6947.

How to make an appointment:

Referrals can be made by paediatricians, general practitioners or other medical practitioners. A current valid referral letter is required for all appointments. Doctors wishing to discuss whether or not referral to a genetics clinic is appropriate are welcome to contact the on-call geneticist or genetic counsellor on 9845 3273.

For urgent referrals for Paediatric or Prenatal referrals, or any inpatient consultations, contact the on-call Fellow in Genetics or the geneticist on call at CHW (telephone the Department or page via the Hospital switchboard). For urgent referrals for Adult outpatients, except Prenatal, contact the on-call Fellow in Genetics or the geneticist on call at Westmead Hospital Department Genetic Medicine (telephone the Department or page via Westmead Hospital switchboard).

Please note: If patients live closer to another Clinical Genetics service which can offer an appropriate service for the patient, we may recommend contacting that service, as waiting lists are often shorter elsewhere.  Other Clinical Genetics services in Sydney are available at Nepean Hospital, Penrith (02 4734 3439), Liverpool Hospital (02 98284679), Royal North Shore Hospital (02 4734 3362), Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown (02 9515 5080), Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick (02 9382 1704) and St George Hospital, Kogarah (9350 2315). Not all sites offer a full range of sub-speciality genetics clinics.
