The Department of Clinical Biochemistry provides a comprehensive service for the biochemical diagnosis and monitoring of disease in infants and children. The Department acts as a reference centre for paediatric biochemistry in NSW, and also as a referral centre for certain specialised tests eg. sweat tests, galactosaemia tests. Within the Department, The Australasian Neurochemistry Laboratory provides a specialised service across Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia for detecting a wide variety of problems in neurotransmitter biochemistry. This includes analysis of catecholamines (noradrenaline, adrenaline, dopamine), indolamines (serotonin), imidazolamines (histamine), pteridines, GABA, and their precursors and metabolites. The Biochemistry Department has a role in research, education and clinical consultation. How to make an appointmentDoctors outside the Hospital may send the patient along with a letter. Appointments are required for sweat tests. Doctors should phone the Department to organise this. For galactokinase assays, doctors should phone us prior to the blood being taken. Staff- Dr John Coakley, Head of Department
- Dr John Earl, Deputy Head and Developmental Biochemist
