ServicesThe Academic Department of Medical Genetics is a collaboration between The Children's Hospital at Westmead and The University of Sydney. The Department is a member of both the Western Sydney Genetics Program (WSGP) as well as the Discipline Group in Genetic Medicine in the University of Sydney. The Western Clinical School includes teachers at both Westmead Hospital as well as The Children's Hospital at Westmead. The Department co-ordinates the delivery of graduate and postgraduate teaching and training in Medical Genetics in the Western Clinical School, the Children's Hospital Clinical School and courses in medical genetics delivered on the main campus of the University. The Academic Department comprises both core staff and all those members of Departments of the Western Sydney Genetics Program who have elected to contribute to teaching in medical genetics in the University of Sydney. Members of the Academic Department of Medical Genetics have played key roles in the development of the Discipline of Genetic Medicine and its sub-disciplines on the Western Campus. The Western Sydney Genetics Program is a leader in postgraduate professional training in clinical and laboratory genetics in Australia. In addition it provides teaching and training to medical graduates from Asia and the Western Pacific. ResearchEnquiries should be directed to Professor David Sillence. The Academic Department undertakes research in: - Skeletal Dysplasias including the brittle bone disorder, Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
- Evaluation and clinical trials of new genetic therapies.
- Community Genetics including genetic issues in migrant populations in NSW.
