Typically a student is attached to our clinical team for a two week period. In addition to participation in the operating theatre, ward rounds, on-call and outpatient sessions, students are expected to undertake a short project, case presentation or literature review. This will be presented to the department and in the past has acted as the basis for a publication or Honours project. In previous years students have been successful in winning the Walter & Eliza Award.
Elective students - There are a few places offered each year to overseas students to undertake an elective in Paediatric Surgery. Local students are strongly encouraged to seek a placement interstate or overseas. Interested students should initially approach The University of Sydney Discipline of Paediatrics & Child Health.
Honours (USydMP students only) - Limited places exist for students to undertake an Honours project in Paediatric Surgery. This typically involves an initial commitment of a three to four week attachment to the department, with an ongoing communication between student and supervisor usually for a period of one year before a submission of a completed project. Usually students are expected to present their work at a local or national meeting with subsequent publication of their work in a peer reviewed journal.
Postgraduate students - Opportunities exist for motivated students with good communication skills to undertake studies leading to a higher degree awarded by the University of Sydney.
- Degree options include Master of Surgery, Master of Medicine (Research) and Doctor of Philosophy. (Related links: Surgery, University of Sydney, Discipline of Paediatrics & Child Health)
- Students generally need to secure their own funding through a research grant or scholarship, although there are opportunities for supplementary funding in special cases.
Fellow in Academic Paediatrics (Surgery) - This position would suit a post fellowship paediatric surgeon with an interest in medical education and research. For further details contact the Head of Academic Surgery, Prof Danny Cass or Assoc. Prof. Andrew Holland.
