Department of Adolescent Medicine Clinical Research
Overview
The Department of Adolescent Medicine has a strong research program which focuses on informing and evaluating our clinical practice. All clinical staff are encouraged to participate in research activities, and the program has expanded dramatically over the past 10 years. The Department collaborates with a range of other hospital departments on research projects including Psychological Medicine, Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology, Nuclear Medicine, Haematology, Biochemical Genetics, Children's Hospital Education Research Institute (CHERI), Children's Hospital Institute of Sports Medicine (CHISM), the Child Development Unit, and Dietetics.
The Department supports and collaborates with the NSW Centre for the Advancement of Adolescent Health (CAAH), a technical support agency that builds the capacity and confidence of partner agencies in responding to youth health issues.
The Department also collaborates on research projects with many institutions beyond our own hospital including Sydney University, the University of Western Sydney, the University of NSW, Flinders University, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, the University of Kiel in Germany, Westmead Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Nepean Hospital, St George's Hospital in London, the United Christian Hospital in Hong Kong, Kartini Clinic in Oregon, the NSW Departments of Health and Education, the Brain Dynamic Centre (BDC), The Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit (APSU), Westmead Millennium Institute, The Eating Disorder Foundation, the Butterfly Foundation and the School Nurses Association (SNAN).
The Department's research program is supported by a range of sources, including grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Centre for Research into Adolescent Health (CRASH), and other government bodies, professional associations and philanthropic groups.
Department staff often supervise or co-supervise Honours, Masters and PhD students in research projects, and value their contribution to the program. We welcome expressions of interest from research students interested in Adolescent Medicine, and from volunteers who are interested in assisting with our research activities. For further information, please feel free to contact any of our research staff.
