Rehabilitation Consultant

The medical rehabilitation care of children/young people with an acquired brain injury is managed by a Rehabilitation Consultant/Specialist. The consultant is a paediatrician who specialises in rehabilitation medicine and the care of children/young people. Initially, there may be other medical teams involved, for example, the Neurosurgical Team. The Rehabilitation Consultant may become the main doctor who manages the child/young person's care in hospital, when the main focus of care becomes rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation Registrar

This doctor works closely with the Rehabilitation Consultant and is likely to have day-to-day contact with the child/young person during the inpatient stage. The registrar keeps the Rehabilitation Consultant informed of progress and consults with him/her about the child/young person's rehabilitation care.

Other roles include:

• Managing any medical problems the child/young person may have as they recover from their illness or injury.
• Explaining the impact and likely outcome following the illness or injury.
• Consulting with other specialists involved in the child/young person's care to ensure that the best possible plan for rehabilitation can be made.
• Informing the child/young person's general practitioner (and/or paediatrician) of progress.
• Providing families with written information.
• Assisting with the completion of forms such as the Carer's Allowance and the RTA Mobility Parking Scheme.
• Preparing medico-legal reports.
• Reviewing the child/young person's long term progress in the outpatient rehabilitation clinic.
