Neuropsychological Assessments

Disclaimer: This information sheet is for education purposes only. Please consult with your doctor or other health professional to make sure this information is right for your child.

What is a neuropsychological assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment measures and evaluates thinking and behaviour through interview, observation and testing (using pencil and paper tasks, puzzles, drawing, word games, and memory games). The assessment may cover cognitive areas (thinking skills) such as

  • General intellectual level
  • Memory and learning
  • Attention and concentration
  • Language
  • Planning and organisation
  • Problem solving

Why have neuropsychological assessments?

Neuropsychological assessments help plan your child's rehabilitation program by identifying their strengths and weaknesses. They are used for decision making about your child's school program and other areas of your child's life (eg play and social activities and career choices).

Who can do neuropsychology assessments?

Psychologists who have undergone advanced training. These psychologists are experienced in detecting any changes in thinking processes, memory and behaviour which may have occurred as a result of your child's brain injury.

How long will it take?

Allow 3-4 hours for the testing. Breaks are provided as needed.
