About Us
The Orthotic Department provides orthoses (ie rehabilitation, orthopaedic, orthotic and related devices). Orthoses are worn by patients to offer support, protection, correction to the musculoskeletal system and to enhance mobility. Each orthosis is generally custom made to ensure comfort and afford the most intimate fit and function possible.
The Department provides services to hospital inpatients as well as outpatients. Orthotists regularly attend Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation clinics and are also available to attend other outpatient clinics on request.
The Department also provides a consultative service in orthotic management of paediatric conditions to other community centres and participates in teaching programs.
Hours of operation are 7.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Mission
The Orthotic Department works with children and young people, their families, other therapy services and referring medical officers to establish, restore and maintain optimum function and independence. The needs of each child will be assessed and the most appropriate orthotic management will be provided.
Referrals and Appointments
We only accept referrals from Medical Officers associated with The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
A patient with a referral should phone the Orthotics Department to make an appointment.
