Professional background

Richard completed his medical training in 1986 and spent a short period of time in general practise before undertaking training in paediatrics at Sydney Children's Hospital. He completed his paediatric training in 1998 and then trained in paediatric neurology at both Sydney Children's Hospital and the Children's Hospital at Westmead. He completed his training in paediatric neurology in September 2001. He was awarded his MSc in October 2003. After completing his neurology training he undertook a two year research fellowship at the Montreal Children's Hospital (Dr Michael Shevell) and the Montreal Neurological Institute.

Special interest

Richard has particular interests in the neurological basis of paediatric speech and language disorders. He is also interested in the cognitive impact of neurological disease in childhood, in particular diseases involving the cerebellum and Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Positions of responsibility Richard has a joint research appointment with the Children's Hospital Education Research Institute (CHERI). His current research examines the cognitive outcomes of children with acquired cerebellar disease in childhood and the cognitive, language and motor findings in children with Chilrdhood Apraxia of Speech.
