Professional background

Fiona completed her general nursing training at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children at Camperdown (relocated to Westmead 1995) in 1985. Neuroscience certificate completed at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (Sydney) in 1987. Post graduate diploma in nursing management completed at University of Technology in Sydney in 1992.

Fiona has a strong paediatric nursing background and she spent has spent most of her nursing career within the area of paediatric neuroscience. Fiona progressed from clinical nurse specialist in 1988 and was appointed to the nurse unit manager position of the paediatric neuroscience unit in 1989.

Since 1993 Fiona has remained in the Neuro liaison clinical nurse consultant position at the Children's Hospital at Westmead (Royal Alexandra hospital for Children).

Special interest

Fiona is interested in all aspects of paediatric neurology and neurosurgery. This includes childhood epilepsy, epilepsy surgery, neurodegenerative disorders, learning disabilities, hydrocephalus and other rare neurological disorders.

Positions of responsibility

Fiona's day to day responsibilities includes working with children and families in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Her work involves family education, complex discharge planning, providing telephone support and clinical advice for families and other care providers, outreach liaison with outside care agencies such as disability services and schools.

Fiona also has a leadership role at CHW. She acts as a role model and an expert clinician through the provision of education and transfer of nursing skills and knowledge in the clinical setting of paediatric Neuroscience. This includes updating relevant practice guidelines and nursing policies, participating in formal and informal education programs education for nursing staff and maintaining a high profile within the organization.
