Professional background

Deepak graduated from Guy's Hospital Medical School, University of London, in 1991. He underwent training in general paediatrics in London and Brighton, before commencing his paediatric neurology training at Guy's. He completed a clinical fellowship at CHW in Sydney in 2000, and was appointed as a consultant paediatric neurologist at The Children's Hospital at Westmead in 2001, and Senior Staff Specialist in 2007.

Special interest

Deepak is part of the acute neurology service at CHW and has a broad expertise in all aspects of paediatric neurology.

His main interest is childhood epilepsy and he is the lead clinician of the CHW Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, as coordinator of the multidisciplinary team evaluating and managing children with complex epilepsy, including the interpretation of video-EEG studies and pre-surgical evaluation for epilepsy surgery. This is part of the Westmead campus epilepsy program, working closely with neurosurgeon Dr Mark Dexter, adult neurologist Dr Andrew Bleasel and epilepsy colleagues at Sydney Children's Hospital and John Hunter Hospital, forming the broader network of comprehensive epilepsy care across NSW.

He has a particular interest in the genetics of epilepsy, the infant-onset epilepsies, status epilepticus and epilepsy surgery.

Deepak also has an interest in inflammatory disorders of the brain, acute cerebellar ataxia, and new techniques in neuroimaging.

Positions of responsibility

Deepak is currently the Head of The TY Nelson Department of Neurology, and is the Head of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at CHW. Deepak has a keen interest in teaching and is an educator in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine, teaching in all aspects of neurology and epilepsy. He is one of the regular tutors at the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists' annual EEG teaching course.

Deepak has an outreach clinic appointment and visits Orange, NSW on a 4 monthly basis.
