24 Hours Intra-Oesophageal pH Monitoring
24 hours pH monitoring has been the "Gold Standard" for diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal reflux for many years.
Introduction
Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) occurs in nearly all healthy children,
especially during the first year of life due to spontaneous relaxation of
the lower oesophageal sphincter. Small amounts of GOR are a normal
physiological phenomenon, but longer and more frequent episodes of
GOR may also be a cause of morbidity. Continuous 24 hours intra-oesophageal
pH monitoring is the best single test to quantify acid gastro-oesophageal
reflux.
The service was initiated in the Paediatric Department at Westmead
Hospital in 1988 and has become part of the service in The Children's Hospital at Westmead in the Department of Surgery since it opened in 1995.
