Low residue diet

(7 - 10g of dietary fibre per day)
A low residue diet is needed to reduce both the number and size of stools. To achieve this some foods must be avoided.
Foods to avoid
- Wholemeal products - flour, pasta, rice bread, Wonder White® bread, white high fibre bread
- most cereals eg. rolled oats, muesli, Weetbix®, All Bran®
- all dried, fresh and canned fruit except those listed as allowed
- lentils, baked beans, peas and all other vegetables except those listed below.

Foods allowed each day

tomato (two slices per day only) |

beetroot (two slices per day only)

potato (no skin, one per day only) |

canned apple or stewed fresh apple (no skin or core) |

seedless jam, honey, Vegemite®, meat and fish |

butter, margarine, oil, mayonnaise
|
melons - watermelon (no seeds), honeydew and rockmelon |
|
jelly, iceblocks

strained fruit juice (not prune juice) |

tea, coffee, softdrinks

milk, cream, icecream, yoghurt (plain and fruit) or custard |
|
paste strained soups, consomme, vinegar
|
marshmallows, barley sugars, jelly beans, meringues |

Low residue diet
The following is an example of a typical daily intake.
Breakfast
- Rice Bubbles® or Cornflakes® or Special K®
- toast with margarine or butter and honey or Vegemite® or seedless jam
- milk or water or strained juice (not prune juice).
Morning tea
Sponge cake or plain biscuit.
Lunch
- Sandwich (white bread) with meat or chicken or fish or cheese or eggs and lettuce or beetroot or carrot or avocado or tomato
- rockmelon or other allowed fruit
- yoghurt.
Afternoon tea
Scones or ice block or jelly.
Tea
- Meat or chicken or fish or egg
- white pasta or white rice or white bread or one potato (no skin)
- pumpkin or other allowed vegetables
- seedless grapes or other allowed fruit
- icecream or yoghurt
- milk or water or strained juice (not prune juice) or softdrink.
- This diet is usually followed for a short time. Please check with your doctor or dietitian.
- If you have been on a low residue diet for a while, gradually add back high fibre foods to allow your bowel to readjust.
