The Book Bunker

The Book Bunker, the first library of its kind in the world, was made possible through the support of Scholastic Australia and was opened by Mem Fox on 14 August 1997. Resources are provided by Scholastic and other publishers and donors or purchased through fund-raising activities held by the trained volunteer librarians, who are mostly retired teacher-librarians.

As well as lending books, and stories on CD or DVD, the Book Bunker creates a quiet haven away from the stress of illness and treatment. It caters to the special needs of immune-suppressed and infectious patients and many patients and families who speak other languages, including French-speaking patients from New Caledonia.

Visit the Book Bunker on level one of the Hospital, at the bottom of the ramp near the cafeteria.
