Innovative weight management program for teenagers in Western Sydney - the LOOZIT program
An exciting new research program developed by The Children's Hospital at Westmead is now available for young people aged from 13 to16 years of age to help them look good and feel great.
"LOOZIT is one of the first studies in the world to tackle overweight and obesity in young people in a community setting," said Kate Stevenson, LOOZIT study Co-ordinator and Research Dietitian at The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
"Through LOOZIT we aim to empower young people with skills, knowledge and confidence to re-gain control of their body size, build self esteem, set healthy active goals and have fun.
"LOOZIT aims to help young people at a time in their lives when body image is at its most vulnerable and when establishing good self esteem is of high importance," Ms Stevenson said.
The LOOZIT program is currently underway, with two groups running at Castle Hill and the feedback from these participants has been very encouraging.
"The participants involved have enjoyed meeting other young people the same age who share similar concerns. They enjoy the fun activities LOOZIT offers and like belonging to a group."
There is now an opportunity for more young people to join LOOZIT, with another program set to commence at Westmead in September 2006. Young people aged from 13 to16 years who feel that they might benefit from this program are encouraged to attend.
"There is no charge for LOOZIT but the benefits are priceless," Ms Stevenson concluded.
This is a research study which involves a 9 week free-of-charge program starting on 19th September, which will run one afternoon a week from 4.45 p.m. - 6 p.m. at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (with a break over the school holidays). Young people will continue to be supported by a reunion of their group once a school term for a period of 2 years. Bookings are essential.
