Kayaking & Cycling 4 Kemo Kids
It's on again! Preparations are in full swing for the Kayaking for Kemo Kids (K4KK) event, with Cyclists and Kayakers ready to push themselves to the limits and travel the NSW/QLD Coastline - all in support of kids with cancer.
The event, staged in 2007 for the fifth time in K4KK history, will raise vital funds for national cancer research at The Children's Hospital at Westmead and other childhood cancer charities. This year the cycle component has been added - making it bigger, and more challenging, than ever before.
On Saturday 3rd March, 2007, departing from Sydney's Luna Park, the team of six cyclists, six sea kayakers and eight experienced landcrew personnel take on over 2000km of ocean and roads between Sydney and Brisbane. They will stop over in 21 major townships along the spectacular eastern seaboard of NSW and QLD, finishing with a welcome home fundraising expo at Brisbane's Southbank on Sunday 25th March, 2007.
K4KK was the vision of Bob Glenister, who saw it as a way to help his daughter Rebecca who was diagnosed with cancer in 1997. In order to come to terms with his daughter's illness, Bob jumped in a sea kayak and paddled solo from Sydney to Surfers Paradise in 1998. Since that first paddle, Bob has organised four successful Sydney to Brisbane events and raised more than half a million dollars for Children's Cancer Research and support. Thankfully, Rebecca is now a happy, healthy 14 year old, and Bob is still making a difference to kids across Australia!
K4KK has already raised sufficient money to create the first paediatric tumour bank in the Southern Hemisphere, located at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. This facility makes a profound difference to cancer research across Australia, and has placed the Hospital in a better position to improve diagnosis and clinical treatment. One of the K4KK's long term goals is to see a Children's Research Tumour Bank set up in every major children's hospital in Australia.
"We are hoping to raise over $200,000 this year with the help of all communities throughout NSW and QLD," said Bob. "The overwhelming support over the last 10 years from so many people has laid the foundations for us to keep going. Continued support is vital to our success. I welcome new team members and supporters and wish to thank everyone for their efforts."
"It is amazing the support we receive and the sense of achievement that comes from knowing that we have made a difference."
There are many ways to contribute to the cause including organising and attending fundraising events, sponsorships and merchandise sales. Donations can be given to paddlers, cyclists & support crew en route or posted to Kayaking for Kemo Kids, PO Box 636 Albany Creek, QLD, 4035.
