Volunteers in Policing

Give something back and get a whole lot out of it!

Want to make a difference? Want to be involved in something that sets you out from the crowd? Volunteers in Policing (VIPs) are needed across Sydney - including The Children's Hospital at Westmead.

Why would The Children's Hospital at Westmead need Volunteers in Policing? We have over 28,000 admissions each year along with 500,000 occasions of service in our outpatients. That is a lot of parents, families and visitors each year who need help and advice inside the Hospital. Our VIPs listen and provide advice, ensuring that everyone gets the care and attention they need.

Our VIPs are there to point them in the right direction and help them along the way. They also play a significant role with our young patients by visiting wards and telling them all about policing - a great pick-me-up when life in the ward is getting a little dull. VIPs are also great at playing dress-ups with the kids!

And the selection criteria for this job? Common sense, a big heart and a sense of fun. Hours are tailored to suit your lifestyle. You can work two hours a week or 16 hours a week. The choice is all yours.

If you would like to be involved in Volunteers in Policing but don't think that the Hospital environment is the right place for you, VIPs are also needed in all local police commands. They support police in a number of important duties including victim support and language liaison. They support witnesses attending court, become involved in community events and provide services to support special groups in the community. The opportunities are endless and there are bound to be plenty to suit your skills and interests.

VIPs receive on-the-job and specialist training at local police commands. Many of these skills will be useful in other environments and VIPs are always regarded highly by potential employers.

To become a VIP, contact the Crime Prevention Officer at your local police command, visit the website at www.police.nsw.gov.au or call (02) 4323 5501 and speak to the State Co-ordinator.
