Enterprising Redeemer Baptist School students help sick kids
Students from Redeemer Baptist School at North Parramatta will hand over a cheque for over $10,000 to The Children's Hospital at Westmead this week, the proceeds from a special Design and Technology project undertaken by students in year seven and eight.
Malcolm Bromhead, a teacher at Redeemer Baptist School said that the idea to turn the Design and Technology project into a fundraiser for The Children's Hospital at Westmead was motivated by the fact that some of the students had been treated at the Hospital and that the students wanted to prove that Design and Technology could be used to help people. Last year these students decided to fulfil a part of the Design and Technology curriculum in a unique way that also benefits sick children. They designed and hand-made a series of greeting cards with a child focus.
To kick off the project they began fundraising by holding a series of competitions and barbeques. This allowed them to purchase materials to make the cards. They then divided into groups to design and produce the cards which were printed on the school's printing press. Selling and marketing was the next step of the project with the students working hard to sell the cards during school holidays and to have them distributed to local shops.
This was a challenging and fulfilling project for the school students in their Design and Technology course. Redeemer Baptist students enrolled in this subject in previous years have won Minister's Young Design Awards for their creativity and innovation.
The presentation of the cheque to The Children's Hospital at Westmead will be the culmination of much hard work and cooperation by the students. At this presentation the students will be treated to a talk from a member of the Hospital's Research Unit and will even have a visit from the Hospital's mascot, Bandaged Bear.
