The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (NCIRS) receives funding under agreements with the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) and NSW Health as well as external grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Australian Research Council (ARC) and others. The Centre is affiliated with the University of Sydney. The Centre aims to inform policy and planning for immunisation services in Australia and to support initiatives in the surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases, including disease surveillance, vaccine coverage and immunisation adverse events. NCIRS brings together a group of experts and postgraduate students in public health, paediatrics, internal medicine, infectious diseases, epidemiology and laboratory and behavioural sciences.
This is a new position within NCIRS and involves promoting and communicating NCIRS educational activities and translating this across a range of stakeholder groups and channels. The position will assist in supporting the centre’s role in the preparation and communication of various educational outputs generated by NCIRS staff to target a variety of internal and external immunisation stakeholders and will be required to work closely with the NCIRS Senior Policy Officer-Evidence Based Policy Support, other staff within the Evidence Based Policy Support Team and other NCIRS staff. The Communications Officer will work with NCIRS administration staff in the planning, organisation and delivery of workshops, conferences and other meetings as instigated by NCIRS and in the promotion of these events to external stakeholders. The Communications Officer will work closely with the Website and IT Administrator to ensure that the web content remains current and liaise with the relevant NCIRS staff to ensure documentation is regularly reviewed and updated as required. This position will coordinate and develop promotional materials to reflect NCIRS activities to external stakeholders including the NCIRS newsletter and other NCIRS publications, such as the annual report. The position will liaise with the CHW Public Relations staff and NCIRS staff regarding media enquiries. NCIRS is located at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and receives infrastructure support from the Hospital.
The Centre aims to undertake research and surveillance to inform policy and planning for immunisation services in Australia and to develop initiatives which will improve surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases, vaccine coverage and immunisation adverse events. The Centre also conducts an extensive program of clinical trials and epidemiologic research funded by diverse sources. NCIRS brings together a group of experts and postgraduate students in public health, preventive medicine, paediatrics, infectious disease, epidemiology and laboratory and behavioural sciences.
The Manager – Social Research will take the leading role in the development and management of the Centre’s social research program. The social research program aims are to inform policy and planning for immunisation, particularly through research and evaluation of all aspects of immunisation to maximise vaccine coverage. This position will be required to further enhance the Centre’s collaborations with key stakeholders. This position will provide leadership and assist the Deputy Directors and Director, NCIRS to provide excellence in social research as it relates to the promotion of health and prevention of disease by immunisation. The Manager – Social Research will need to interact with the policy support and surveillance sections of the Centre, in addition to providing expert input into social research aspects of clinical research undertaken in the Clinical Research Division of NCIRS. This position will also provide leadership in teaching.
The Manager – Social Research will lead the design, conduct, analysis and presentation of findings of projects relevant to the provision of social research considerations in the field of immunisation nationally. The position also entails developing and maintaining collaboration with peak immunisation bodies nationally, such as the National Immunisation Committee (NIC), State and Territory Departments of Health, and national and state-based organisations of immunisation providers, such as the Australian General Practice Network (AGPN), and jurisdictional GP organisations. This position will provide a senior role in the administrative, management, teaching and supervision of staff working within Social Research project group, and for other staff activities across the Division of Surveillance and Policy Support. The successful applicant will be required to supervise and teach post graduate trainees in the area of Social research in immunisation.
The Manager – Social Research will require strategic, communication and project management skills to support the Centre’s established social research program. The successful applicant will also require demonstrated expertise in the area of social research applied to the field of immunisation and vaccine preventable diseases. Expertise in scientific writing, publication and skills in critical appraisal of scientific literature will be required. The successful applicant will be eligible for the award of an academic title commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. The role also requires supervision and teaching of post graduate staff in the Social Research Area.
Essential: Academic qualification at Doctoral and/or Master of Public Health or equivalent level with extensive research experience or other relevant scholarly training. The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (NCIRS) receives funding under agreements with the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and NSW Health as well as external grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The Centre is located within the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and receives infrastructure support from the Hospital and is affiliated with the University of Sydney, staff have appointments within the Discipline of paediatrics and Child Health and School of Public Health.
The Centre aims to inform policy and planning for immunisation services in Australia and to develop initiatives which will improve surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases and immunisation adverse events. NCIRS brings together a group of experts and postgraduate students in public health, paediatrics, preventable medicine, infectious disease, epidemiology and laboratory and behavioural sciences.
This position will assist in supporting the centre role in preparation of evidenced-based policy documents including scientific writing, publication and evaluation of clinical guidelines for health professionals primarily for the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI). Other scientific support and research support responsibility will include analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data from national vaccine preventable diseases data sets.

Provides a comprehensive social work service to families of children diagnosed with deafness or hearing impairment at the Children’s Hospital by the Statewide Infant Screen of Hearing (SWISH) program.
