The Westmead Research Hub Centre for Cell and Gene Therapy (CCGT) is a newly formed entity comprising two (soon to be three) cell production facilities that undertake routine and research based cell production. Processes include haemopoietic stem cell production for transplantation, pancreatic islet cell production for transplantation, preparation of T cells for immunotherapy and therapeutic gene transfer to cells prior to infusion. We are seeking an individual with experience in cell production to oversee the operation and strategic development of the combined entities that make up the Hub Centre. The Centre comprises 4 specialised clean rooms within two hospitals on the Westmead campus with a third facility on campus currently being planned. Criteria: Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in health care / pharmaceutical / engineering. A sound understanding of, or experience with, the production of cell based products. A part-time temp. Hospital Scientist is required, primarily to perform molecular or cytogenetic investigations employing a variety of DNA, tissue or cell culture methods. The source of human cells to be cultured may be blood, bone marrow, solid tumour, or other. The cells may be normal, malignant or transformed. Techniques used include light and fluorescence microscopy, with computer-assisted karyotyping and image capture. The incumbent may also be called upon to perform some tasks in the Molecular Laboratory, e.g. DNA extraction.

Principal Hospital Scientist

The CHW Cytogenetics Dept comprises almost 30 staff, and offers clinical services in all aspects of human cytogenetics. The department comprises three main sections: 1) Constitutional/neonatal cytogenetics; 2) Prenatal, and 3) Oncology Cytogenetics. It also includes substantial FISH and CGH Microarray sections, and an administrative/clerical component. The Dept is also responsible for some molecular testing [rt-PCR for soft tissue tumors] and is closely associated with the CHW Molecular Genetics Dept [Head: A/Prof Bruce Bennetts], which supplies our department with a DNA extraction & storage service, in association with our microarray work. The appointee to this Principal Scientist position will have extensive background and qualifications in clinical cytogenetics [both conventional & molecular], and will apply this expertise to the management of one major section within the CHW Cytogenetics Dept. In the first instance, this section will be that dealing with Prenatal Diagnosis and Products of Conception. Within the section, the appointee will be the line manager of a lab team, which includes one Senior Scientist, several scientists, and one trainee. In this managerial role, the appointee will be responsible for the “accountabilities“ listed below. In addition, the appointee will be expected to act as Head of the Cytogenetics Dept, and so have responsibility for the running of the entire Dept, during any absences of the Dept Head. When working as Prenatal Section Head, or when acting as Dept Head, the appointee will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary health care team of the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, and any other Hospitals or clinical service providers reliant upon our laboratory’s work. At all times, such work is undertaken with the express aim of providing the highest possible quality of cytogenetic service, to all our patients and their families.

Criteria: A higher degree, at the PhD level (or equivalent). A broad experience of Clinical Cytogenetics with at least 10 years postgraduate experience in an appropriate scientific field. Experience in management of, or within, a Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory. Experience of molecular cytogenetics, or molecular genetics. Professional Qualification in Cytogenetics, such as FHGSA[Cytogenetics], or international equivalent. Demonstrated success in building effective relationships with staff and consumers. Demonstrated skills in team leadership. Experience of microarray technology and/or bioinformatics is desirable. Previous experience in promoting research and obtaining grants is preferred. Experience in promoting a culture of continuous improvement. Demonstrated ability to coordinate effective multidisciplinary teams is desirable. Demonstrated ability to be innovative and adapt to changing circumstances. Demonstrated ability to manage a department’s [or a departmental section’s] budget is desirable.

The Renal Treatment Centre (RTC) provides children of all ages with a variety of renal therapies including: peritoneal dialysis; haemodialysis; therapeutic plasma exchange; pre and post renal transplant care. This position involves patient education and home visiting support, therefore clear communication skills and a NSW drivers license are essential. We understand the scope of practice is varied and will provide orientation to the specialty, in addition to ongoing education and support. The RTC opens Monday to Friday 8am until 8.30pm, so if you are looking for weekends off and very reasonable finishing times, this could be an ideal position for you!

Criteria: Registered Nurse (A List) with current Licence to practice from NSW Nurses Registration Board. Minimum 2 years experience in an Acute Care Setting. “Working with Children” check clearance. Weekend Ward Receptionist
