Uses of Clinical/Statistical Information Supported by CASU

CHW

There are a large number of reports that have been designed to provide information for operational and management requirements. These reports are written by CASU staff according to requests received by the users of this information. Some reports can be run by staff, and some examples are: ward clerks print a current list of inpatients each day; medical records print clinic lists for record retrieval; outpatients print patient lists for each clinic; Patient Administration use reports to check for missing Medicare numbers; the Department of Finance print lists of discharges; the Management Support and Analysis Unit (MSAU) run statistical reports on inpatients and outpatients; Nursing staff use reports to check whether patient have an expected date of discharge entered.

NSW Health

CHW have successfully implemented the Health Information Exchange (HIE) to support reporting to NSW Health, as well as internal reporting. Access is provided for staff across the organisation through the use of Business Objects, a user-friendly front-end tool. Data from all Cerner modules supported by CASU feed into the HIE, along with other hospital clinical systems. Data is retrieved for regular and adhoc reporting to provide information for a wide range of purposes, including: management; research; clinical/nursing; casemix; and patient statistics/demographics.

Balanced Scorecard

The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) IM&T Strategy has been developed to support the overall strategic direction of the Hospital and NSW Health. The Strategy is closely aligned with the adoption of a service improvement focus and balanced scorecard as a means to ensuring successful alignment and implementation of the broader hospital strategy. Developing a balanced scorecard will provide a link between the Hospital's strategic goals and outcomes. (IM&T Strategy 2003 - 2007)
