About CASU

The Clinical Application Support Unit (CASU) is a department within the Division of Information Services at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW). CASU was established in July 1999 to provide expert knowledge and support to users of clinical systems. The major priority is the transition to a paperless medical record and improvement in patient care through immediate access to clinical information. Applications supported by CASU specialise in specific areas, and together with several other applications, form the basis of the Electronic Medical Record (eMR). CASU's ongoing role is involved in managing the Electronic Medical Record.

The eMR is known as PowerChart (selected as state standard by NSW Health), a product developed by the Cerner Corporation, which is the main viewing tool for clinical information and includes:

  • Patient details and visit history
  • Orders & Results
  • Growth Charts
  • Emergency Department (ED) & Inpatient Discharge Summaries
  • Outpatient Appointments
  • Departmental Letters/Reports
  • Scanned paper medical record
  • Allergies and Problems
